There are two basic types of softener - single tank and twin tank.
The single tank regenerates at regular predetermined intervals usually during the night and needs to be plugged in.
The twin tank has two brine tanks and when one is exhausted will switch to the other one while the first one regenerates thus you have a continuous supply of softened water regardless of demand. It works purely on water flow and doesn't need to be plugged in.
